Osamu Suzuki, the former charismatic head of Suzuki Motor Corp. who turned the Japanese mini vehicle maker into a global player with an overwhelming dominance in India's car market, has died of malignant lymphoma on Wednesday at a hospital in Hamamatsu in the central prefecture of Shizuoka, the company said.

Osamu Suzuki, Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, played a pivotal role in transforming the Indian automobile landscape. His efforts, particularly through Suzuki's partnership with India's Maruti Udyog (now Maruti Suzuki), revolutionized the Indian automotive industry.

Osamu Suzuki's greatest achievement was often considered to be his expansion into India. He came across a newspaper article about the Indian government’s search for an automaking partner and, in 1982, met with a team from the South Asian nation in a Tokyo hotel.

Suzuki Motor agreed to set up a venture with the Indian government outside New Delhi and acquired a 26% stake in the state-owned carmaker Maruti Udyog. The next year, the venture rolled out the Maruti 800 small car, which was so popular that waiting times to purchase it stretched as long as three years.

The company quickly became a dominant player in India's automobile sector, providing affordable, fuel-efficient cars that were perfectly suited to the needs of Indian consumers. Under Suzuki's leadership, Maruti introduced mass-market cars like the Maruti 800, which became an iconic model and symbolized India's transition into a modern, car-owning society.

Osamu Suzuki's vision and strategic decisions helped build Maruti Suzuki into the largest car manufacturer in India, with a significant market share. His focus on quality, cost-efficiency, and innovation, coupled with his understanding of the Indian market, allowed Suzuki to create products that resonated with the aspirations of a rapidly growing middle class.

Beyond the cars themselves, Suzuki's efforts also contributed to the development of a robust automobile ecosystem in India, including manufacturing infrastructure, supplier networks, and skill development programs. Suzuki's long-term commitment to India and its partnership with Maruti continue to shape the Indian automotive industry, making Osamu Suzuki a key figure in its transformation.

PM Modi condoled the passing away of Osamu Suzuki, a legendary figure in the global automotive industry. Prime Minister Shri Modi remarked that the visionary work of Mr. Osamu Suzuki has reshaped global perceptions of mobility. Under his leadership, Suzuki Motor Corporation became a global powerhouse, successfully navigating challenges, driving innovation and expansion.

The Prime Minister posted on X:

“I cherish fond memories of my numerous interactions with Mr. Suzuki and deeply admire his pragmatic and humble approach. He led by example, exemplifying hard work, meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to quality. Heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and countless admirers.”

"Reforms undertaken by PM Modi are indescribable and these reforms are changing India into a 'Model Landscape' while the self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar) theme is supported by the Japanese investors very strongly," Osamu Suzuki said once.
